Flash Friday: Scribblenauts Unmasked

Happy Flash Friday everyone!  Here at That F’ing Monkey we’ve been talking a lot about the DC comic themed puzzle game Scribblenauts Unmasked.  While we mentioned two Flash related characters in the earlier updates today is going to go into detail in how the Flash is handled.  The game surprised me a lot of times in both good ways and in bad ones.

 I’m going to get some of the game setup out of the way first so the rest makes sense.  The game is divided up into a bunch of mini-maps.  Most of these are unlocked and need to be purchased with the correct type of medals.  There are Batman medals, Superman medals, and Justice League medals; each of these medals unlocks different types of things.  You’ll need a Batman Medal to unlock the Wayne Manor map.   You use a Justice League medals to unlock Central City.  Medals also let you buy superhero costumes for Maxwell; each costume gives Maxwell that hero’s powers. 

Central City is the only Flash related mini-map and as I stated above it is unlocked Justice League medals.  That map does have a Flash Museum in it, so that is pretty cool.  The story has you in a race against Professor Zoom.  You have to ride on the Flash’s shoulders and stop all the traps your doppelganger throws at you.  You can also unlock the Flash’s origin story.  This is the new 52 version, so you have Barry’s dad going away for a crime he didn’t commit.  While it isn’t s character, the cosmic treadmill is in the game.  I used it in one of the random challengers when a time traveler needed to get back to their home. 

I’ve done my best to look up everything that would be of interest to a Flash fan.  The big surprise for me was the lack of Impulse;  Inertia made it in but no Impulse.  The other real surprise is Winky, Blinky, and Noddy from the Jay Garrick stories made it in.  I’ve probably missed something or someone important; there are a lot of characters in this game.

Scribblenauts Unmasked Reveal Part 2

Welcome to the second part of our Scribblenauts character reveal.  Scribblenauts Unmasked is a puzzle game with a huge database of DC characters.  Last week I named 10 fairly obscure characters that I wanted to see make the game.  Yesterday we covered the first 5 and only 2 of my picks actually made it into the game.  Today’s list is made up of the remaining 5.  Read below to see who made the video game cut. 

Wild Dog

Wild Dog is in the game!  I was thrilled to see that hockey mask.  The odd thing is that in his history the game lists him active in Chicago.  Wild Dog was from the Quad Cities.  I should probably be ashamed that I knew that.  Anyway, Wild Dog is one of my favorite comic characters so I’m glad he made it into the game.

G.I. Robot

G.I. Robot is in the game!  J.A.K.E. is listed as a member of the Creature Commandos in the game.  For some reason he looks pretty angry in the game, I’m not really sure why they did that. 

Simon Dark

Simon Dark is not in the game.  Despite being based in Gotham, I don’t know that Simon is totally owned by DC.  I have a feeling that has something to do with it. 

Terrific Whatzit

The Terrific Whatzit is not in the game.  His nephew is in the game!  This isn’t really surprising; Fastback is far better known than Whatzit.  The Crash, the super fast turtle for the Just Alot of Animals is not in the game either.

Probert

Probert is not in the game.  Hardly surprising, this was the most obscure character on my list.  Still, it would have been fun.

So only 4 of my 10 characters actually made it into Scribblenauts Unmasked.  This makes it seem like the character database is lacking.  It isn’t.  I’ve had more fun typing random characters into the Batcomputer than actually playing the game.  Check back tomorrow for some more in depth Flash coverage.

Scribblenauts Unmasked Reveal Part 1

Last week I spent two days naming the first 1o characters that I was going to look up in the video game Scribblenauts Unmasked.  I think you’re going to be surprised by some of the characters that made it into the game.  I know I was surprised by some of the things that were left out.  The character reveals will run Wednesday and Thursday.  As far as the game goes, it is a good deal of fun.  I haven’t played a Scribblenauts game since the first one.  At one point last night I tamed a bear.  Since it was tame I decided to ride it.  Then I pulled up my note pad and suddenly it was a rocket powered plaid bear wearing a red football helmet.  Enough of that though, let’s get to the list.

Walter West

Walter West is not in the game, not even as the Dark Flash.  I’m not going to lie; this surprised the hell out of me.  I figured it would be one of the easiest things on my list.  There are a lot of Flash characters though; heroes, villians, and supporting characters.  I will most likely be taking a look at the Flash content of this game on Friday.  There is a lot to it and I want to make sure I’m not missing anything. 

Comet the Super-Horse

Comet is in the game!  Not just as his horse form either; there is also the humanoid version from the Peter David Supergirl stories.  I’m not going into that version’s history, I wasn’t reading Supergirl and trying to understand it makes my head hurt. 

Jack O’Lantern

Jack O’Lantern is in the game!  Okay, the costume isn’t the same one I posted a picture of, but that’s because I used a picture of my favorite version and not the most recent.  On top of just being able to create Jack, you can also create his lantern.  Seriously, it has its own entry in the game.  That’s pretty impressive.

Haunted Tank

Haunted Tank is not in the game.  This one is a little disappointing.  You can create tanks.  Vehicles like the Bat-Tank are in the game.  War characters like the Losers and Blackhawk are in the game.  You can create a tank and then create a ghost to drive it.  It’s not the same but it is as close as you can get.

Tallulah Black

Tallulah Black is not in the game.  Although I figured she was a bit obscure she is a pretty recent character.  When the game didn’t find her I figured it might be because she was a western character and this is a game about superheroes.  There are some western characters in the game though; Jonah Hex, Bat Lash, El Diablo, Nighthawk, and two versions of Cinnamon are all included.  Also, I had to include a picture of Jonah Hex because he’s adorable.

That’s the first five!  Only two members of our list were actually included.  Check back tomorrow to see who else made it into the game.

Scribblenauts Unmasked Update

I went on a lunch break adventure today and was able to pick up Scribblenauts.  Tomorrow we will have all of the results to the character search I talked about last week.  I've already spent 15 minutes with the game and I have to say I'm pretty surprised by some of the characters that are included. 

I also had to run into GameStop to pick it up.  That's not something I normally do anymore.  That company and I have mostly parted ways after I saw how they treated a friend of mine.  Anyway I ran into all of the bad sterotypes that people expect from GameStop.  I'm going to enjoy what is left of my lunch break and see what other obscure characters I can play with.

Stories for the Boy

That F’ing Monkey had its 900^th update this week; it almost had its last.  This happens quite a bit actually.  I look to the numerous bookshelves in my room and find myself crushed by jealousy.  This website started as a writing exercise, became a failed money maker, and then…  Well I don’t know anymore.  Very rarely am I actually creating anything, usually I’m just reacting to something that is already out there.  At some point I’d like to be able to place a book in my son’s hands and say “this is the book that your father wrote.” 

Now I have a finished novel that I haven’t done anything with in over a year.  I do want to polish it once more and see about getting it published.  This is not the book I want to share with my son as he grows up though; a detective investigating snuff films isn’t the kind of family bonding I’m going for.  There are other ideas though, characters that have lived in my head for years that are dying to be written about.  Some of them are original and others are table top role playing game characters that still haunt my thoughts long after their games have ended. 

I’m no Tolkien and I’m not comparing myself to him, but I want to create a world that is unique to my own stories.  As he grows up I want to tell my son stories of heroism, victoires, sacrifices, and betrayals.  Bedtime stories wouldn’t be pulled from someone else’s book, but directly from my stories.  I’ve been thinking a lot about this and it’s likely you’ll see more about this as I start to plot things out.  Character backgrounds, races, creatures, cities, and things like that might start popping up more and more.  My son is only a year and a half old, so I have some time to get my shit together before he starts understanding the stories I tell him.  Besides right now he only wants to look at pictures of cars.

Hangover Thursday: Dual Beer Glass

It’s Hangover Thursday, how’s your head?  I’ve been so busy lately I haven’t even had time to sneak off to the bar.  I do have a fridge full of beer that is going to be attacked this weekend so I can make up for it.  Today’s Hangover Thursday is all about mixing beers.  The Black and Tan is a classic but that isn’t the only time people mix beers.  It’s becoming more and more popular to have suggested mixed beer drinks on menus lately.   

Etsy seller PretentiousBeerGlass has taken the concept to a whole other level.  Their Dual Beer Glass is a thing of beauty.  I’m not joking either, the craftsmanship is pretty amazing.  The Dual Beer Glass has a glass divider in the center of the glass letting you add a different beer to each side.  Some beers combinations, like the Black and Tan, layer when poured.  Other combinations sort of mix but don’t seem to really even out.  This glass fixes that.

This is a handmade glass and PretentiousBeerGlass makes the note that because the process is so different from normal glasses that there is more variance in this glasses dimensions.  It is going to be anywhere between 5 and 6 inches tall and hold between 10 and 12 ounces.  The glasses run 35 dollars each or you can order a set of four for 125.  Check them out for yourself by clicking here.

Tales from the Brain Jar, #25

I haven’t posted a Tales from the Brain Jar since last December, so this is overdue.  For those new to Tales, I’ve been collecting sketches involving brain jars since 2004.  Today’s Tales from the Brain Jar comes from 2010’s Star Wars Celebration V.  I remember being surprised that Star Wars artists were going to be attending and I was more than happy to bring my sketch book with me to the convention.

Today’s sketch is done by Katie Cook.  Katie is probably best known for her web comic Gronk.  She also wrote the incredible and illustrated the mini book, “Fuck You, Box”.  That book is a must read for anyone who has ever owned a cat.  She also writes the My Little Pony comic book.  So yes, Katie is just a whole box full of awesome. 

The sketch today is considered a “mini sketch” and is something Katie is known for doing at conventions.  It makes sense; artists can either do a few full sized pieces or a number of little ones.  This way anyone who wants a piece is able to get one and it’s affordable to most people.   Since we were at a Star Wars convention I opted for some Jawas, because I can totally see them stealing a brain if they could get away with it.  Because Jawas are so small anyway I think them being so tiny on the page actually adds to the piece.  Anyway, check out Katie’s webpage HERE and see more of her work for yourself.

Pariah, Missouri Book 1

There are a lot of amazing Kickstarter and Indiegogo fundraisers out there.  I really try not to spend too much time looking at projects because the things I want to fund far outnumber my hobby budget.  Even on the projects I do support, there are usually cool rewards levels that are out of my reach.  What I’m trying to say is that I understand when someone misses out on backing an incredible project like Pariah, Missouri.  There are just too many things out there to back every one you like. Last December we talked about the Supernatural Western comic and how excited I was for it.

If you missed out on Pariah the first time you are in luck.  A brand new Kickstarter has been put up that tells even more of the story.  Book 1 of Pariah, Missouri collects 5 issues and runs over 110 pages.  If you’re already hooked on the project there is a hard cover special edition of the book that includes things like script pages, commentary, and a 5 page prelude.  There are also other add-ons available; things like prints, shirts, and additional copies of the trade.  The project is already fully funded and it's only been up a couple of days, that should tell you something about the quality of this book.

Pariah, Missouri is written and colored by Andres Salazar and the art is provided by Jose Pescador.  I don’t want to downplay the story, because the story is awesome, but this is a beautiful book.  The muted color pallet fits the art perfectly.  If you like westerns or period supernatural stories this is a book you want to read.  I went into the first auction blind, I knew it sounded cool but I wasn’t sure if I’d actually like the book.  I can tell you that after getting the first comic I’m a fan.  I want this first collection to be successful because I’m greedy and I want more.  Check out the Kickstarter for yourself by clicking here.

Flash Friday: Mummy Flash

Happy Flash Friday everyone!  I know it’s been a little while since we’ve had one of these but there haven’t been a whole lot of Flash related items that I’ve wanted to talk about lately.  I only know about today’s item because my wife found it while shopping for clothes for our son.  I’m actually pretty surprised how often places like the Baby Gap have Flash shirts.  I’m also surprised that a one year old’s shirt costs the same as mine, but that’s a complaint for another day.

So here we have it, the Flash’s “Catch Me If You Can” mummy shirt.  I believe my first words upon seeing this were “What the fuck?”  I still thing it sums the shirt up nicely.  To give it some context, this shirt is a Halloween shirt so the Flash is dressed up as a monster.  I guess it’s supposed to be funny because the old shambling mummy is the fastest superhero?  I don’t know.  The whole thing is still really strange to me and I normally really like strange. 

The store I was in also had Batman as a vampire.  At least that one works thematically.  The shirt is made by Junkfood.  If there is an adult version of this shirt available I wasn’t able to find it, but honestly I didn’t look very hard.

Barnkickers Indiegogo

I first ran into the Barnkicker’s music back in 2010.  I have a tendency to invest a lot of myself in music.  The type of bands on That F’ing Monkey are scattered across all sorts of musical genres.  When I discovered the Barnkickers I quickly ordered their CD.  I devoured every track multiple times and went looking for more.  But that one CD was all there was.  I needed more.

 

Now there is a chance for more.  Amanda Boisen of the Barnkickers has started an Indiegogo fundraiser to help produce a new album.  The CD will be released under the name AmandaLynn but her father will still be accompanying her and he is the executive producer of the album.  As with all fundraisers there are tons of different donation levels and lots of neat things to purchase.  The 150 level taunts me in my dreams because I know I can’t afford it.  I’d love to have her father teach me how to play upright bass too, but I have a feeling that would probably take more than one lesson.  I’d probably need to actually own an upright bass too.

Scribblenauts Unmasked Part 2

Yesterday we started talking about Scribblenauts Unmasked, a DC comics version of the hit puzzle game Scribblenauts.  One of the big hype points of the game is the sheer number of DC characters that are said to be included.  A claim like that ensured the first thing I would do when I got the game would be to throw some strange and obscure characters just to see if they are included. 

We already covered the first five characters yesterday and today we’re going to cover five more.  When the game comes out later this month I’ll post all the results and include some screen shots of the Scribblenaut version for each of the characters that made it into the game. 

Wild Dog

DC’s 1997 answer to Marvel’s Punisher is one of my favorite comic characters.  Much like the “Dark Flash” from yesterday, Wild Dog’s identity was kept from the readers.  His first mini-series followed a few potential people that Wild Dog could be and in the end revealed him to be ex-Marine Jack Wheeler.  After his four issue series Wild Dog was part of Action Comics Weekly.  After that he’s been used incredibly sparingly.  He had a cameo in Infinite Crisis and in an issue of Booster Gold after that he’s been mostly forgotten. 

G.I. Robot

I had to dive into my own backlog of posts for this one because I was sure that I had already written about J.A.K.E.; I was wrong.  There have been a number of characters named G.I. Robot, Joe and Mac appeared in Weird War Tales in 1962 and 1966.  When most people here the name they think of J.A.K.E. 1 and J.A.K.E. 2 who showed up in Weird War Tales in 1981 and 1982.  Jakes’s big power seems to be sacrificing himself for others.  Expect a full write up on J.A.K.E. 2’s first appearance, it’s a book I picked off the spinner rack as a kid and it is amazing.

Simon Dark

Simon debuted in his own mini-series in 2007.  The dark book took place in a side of Gotham that most had never seen before.  Created by Steve Niles and Scott Hampton Simon the character was actually stitched together with science and magic.  Things for Simon get very, very weird.  The big question about his inclusion in Scribblenauts will be if he is wholly owned by DC or partially creator owned.  Either way it’d be great to see Simon included.

Terrific Whatzit

I had to go silly at some point didn’t I?  The Terrific Whatzit is a character that debuted way back in 1944.  This funny animal version of the Golden Age Flash is a turtle who removes his shell when he dons his costume.  Without his shell no one can tell what kind of animal he is, so everyone calls him a Whatzit.  I’d say his chances are pretty slim to actually make the game.  They may surprise me though and include characters like the Zoo Crew.

Probert

Scribblenauts Unmasked will forever be my favorite game if they include this one.  Probert was introduced in a 1994 issue of Green Lantern Corps Quarterly.  He is based off of the hockey player Bob Probert.  Probert is a bounty hunter that was offered a power ring to bring in another Lantern that has gone rogue.  Probert refused to wear a ring and set off on his own.  Eventually he internalized the ring’s power and took down the other Lantern.  He made a few appearances in Guy Gardner: Warrior but hasn’t been seen since then.

Scribblenauts Unmasked Part 1

Scribblenauts is an inventive puzzle game where you control Maxwell and his magical notepad.  Anything you write out pops into existence and can be used to help Maxwell solve his puzzles.  Later this month a DC comics themed version of the game is coming to 3DS, WiiU, and the PC.  One of the things they are boasting about is just how many characters are in the game.  The numbers thrown around are crazy.  There are supposed to be something like 130 Green Lanterns.   If they’ve been in DC comics then they are supposed to be in the game. 

Because I’m such a fan of DC’s C and D listers I’m incredibly excited for this.  I already have some credit lined up and will be getting this when it comes out.  I know there will be puzzles to solve but at soon as I get the game I’m going to be throwing names at it to see if they are included.  Because we’ve been doing Top 10 lists lately I’m going to list the 10 characters I want to see in the game.  These get a little long so I’m splitting the list up into two parts, so check back tomorrow for the next 5.  There will be a follow up when I get the game including screen shots of the characters that make the cut. 

I’m starting my list with the characters that I think have the best chances to make it into Scribblenauts.  As the list goes on the chances of the character showing up gets slimmer and slimmer.

Walter West

Deep down he is my favorite Flash character.  And let’s be honest here, the first hero name I type into the game is going to be the Flash just to see how many versions are available.  Walter was an alternate universe version of Wally who was driven mad when his version of Linda was killed.  His actual identity was a huge mystery when he first appeared but even without that mystery I really enjoy the character.  The “Dark Flash” suit is such a great look that I think this character has the best chance of being in the game.  It was also used in the game Justice League Heroes, I remember using it over all the other suits because I liked the look of it so much.

Comet the Super-Horse

I’ve really been meaning to write about Comet the Super-Horse because his story is so absurd that I’m in love with every second of it.  Comet first appeared in a 1962 Superboy story that was published in Adventure Comics.   After that he became more of a Supergirl character.  Comet was originally a centaur who was turned into a horse by Circe.  Circe actually wanted to turn him human so because she messed up she also gave him superpowers.  Another spell allowed him to turn human “while a comet passes through the solar system he is in.”  During these times he went by the name Bill Starr and dated Supergirl.  Despite that crazy story, Comet is attached to the Superman family so I’m guessing his chances of making it into the game are pretty good. 

Jack O’Lantern

There have been three different Jack O’Lanterns and he’s been on the Global Guardians, Primal Force, and the Ultramarine Corps.  That’s a lot of changes and affiliations for a character that really doesn’t show up very often.  The first two versions of Jack O’Lantern carried a mystic lantern that gave a huge list of different powers from creating fog to shooting fire.  The last version of the character was able to internalize his powers.  There isn’t much to the Jack costume and he’s been in the background of some pretty big events so he has a pretty good chance of showing up.

Haunted Tank

First appearing in G.I. Combat back in 1961 the Haunted Tank is exactly what the name suggests.  The ghost of Confederate general J.E.B Stuart watches over Lieutenant Jeb Stuart and his Light Tank M3 Stuart.  G.I Combat ran for over 20 years, so the Haunted Tank is pretty well known.  I don’t think the game will have any problems creating the tank or the ghost, but we probably won’t see it flying a Confederate flag.

Tallulah Black

Tallulah first appeared in a 2007 issue of Jonah Hex.  A female bounty hunter with a tragic past Tallulah ran across Jonah Hex a few times and eventually the two became lovers.  I have no idea if Scribblenauts will be including DC’s western characters, they may just be sticking to the spandex bunch.  Tallulah’s chances may or may not have been helped by being included in the Jonah Hex movie.

Some Movies Have It Coming

I would like to introduce you to Rifftrax. If you already know Rifftrax, then you know just how awesome it is. If not, click on that there link and lose a few hours. Rifftrax is Mike (Mike) Nelson, Kevin (Tom Servo) Murphy, and Bill (Crow) Corbett. Also known as the stars of a little show called Mystery Science Theater 3000. What they do is create a "riff" that you download and sync up to the movie you want to watch. This is how they avoid those pesky lawsuits. It is fucking brilliant. I would suggest you watch one as soon as humanly possible. 

Might I suggest "Predator"? Yes I might.

Another thing that Rifftrax does is some shorts. These things are hilarious and well worth the few bucks they cost. Once again I have a suggestion. Goodbye, Weeds. In this short you learn valuable lessons. Like did you know there was a product that makes weeds commit suicide? Yep. Don't think too hard about it.

Plus this week there is a encore of their riff of "Starship Troopers" on the big screen near you! Go. It is well worth it. In October they are rocking "Night of the Living Dead"!

So grab some beer, curl up on the couch, and watch some awesome. Tell them F'ing Monkey sent ya. They will have zero idea what the hell you are babbling about!

Brown Eyed Boy

Hey everyone, this is a heads up that I'm going to be super busy the rest of the week with some family stuff.  Because of that, That F'ing Monkey won't be updating again until next week.  Sorry of the delay, I just won't have much time to talk about comics for the next few days.  Until then you should enjoy "Brown Eyed Boy" from the Hillbilly Moon Explosion.

I've posted their music before, but they are so fantastic that I don't mind posting a second song of theirs.  Everyone have a great weekend.

Super Alloy Green Lantern

I wasn’t paying attention when DC started their Super Alloy line of figures.  I don’t think I can really be blamed though; it started with Superman and Batman.  When I’m looking at solicits I skim over the Batmans and Supermans pretty quickly these days.  It was when I saw pictures of the Super Alloy Green Lantern figure that I stopped and did a quadruple take.  It’s a seriously impressive looking figure with a seriously impressive looking price tag.

Approximately 12 inches tall this figure is 80% die cast material.  The paint is a mixture of glossy metallic paints, matte metallic paints, and polished metal with a protective covering.   The figure comes with five different sets of hands and has more than 25 points of articulation.  It also comes with clear green plastic armor that clips on over the figures.  The figure stand has an adjustable claw to help pose Green Lantern.  The figure has it all and it should, because it costs around 360 dollars. 

I almost forgot one of the coolest features of the figure, the LED lights.  There are LED lights in the figures eyes and chest emblem that are controlled by remote control.  There are also LED lights in the ring on the “fist hand” and in the accessory Lantern; neither of these are controlled by the remote control.  All fo the batteries are removable and the figure comes with a screwdriver to open the battery compartments. 

You know when the figure comes with a microfiber cleaning cloth that it’s pretty serious.  It’s a beautiful figure.  I like figures like these because if I was a Hal Jordan fan I could have this on display and know that I’d never really need to buy another figure of him.  Back when I was collecting Star Wars I’d by every X-Wing that came out.  Eventually I bought the very expensive Code 3 version and sold all the others.  I had that perfect piece I didn’t need any others.  I feel this is that piece for Jordan fans.
